Great Big Sea German Tour
25 March 1999
from Cindy
On January 23rd in the evening, I went to my friends home in Löhne by train. I arrived at 7:30 p.m. at the central station where my friend was already waiting for me. I had wanted to arrive the next day but because the GBS concert in Bielefeld began at 11 a.m., I´ve had to change my plans. I´m so happy that I could sleep at my friends home, thanx Markus!

Next morning, we met at 9 a.m. with some other friends and went to Bielefeld. Bielefeld is about 30 minutes away from Löhne. Unfortunately, the weather wasn´t very good, it was raining and very windy. Fortunately, the room where the concert took place was in a big venue, so we didn´t have to wait in the cold. We got our tickets and were waiting for admission. The concert was a WDR special which means that the gig was a live broadcast for one hour by a radio station called WDR5. We were also very surprised as we heard that the concert will be for free. As the doors opened, me and my friends went in and took place in the first and second row of chairs. Then as it was 11 a.m. a man came on stage and presented the concert. Yeah, finally the guys were on stage. They started with "Ordinary Day". After this song the man from the radio station came on stage again and talked about GBS. Then "Process Man", "Billy Peddle", "Tunes", "Goin Up" and "Fast As I Can" followed.

I tried to take pictures but suddenly I recognized that I put no film into my camera. The man was talking now again about Newfoundland and the guys. Always as the man was speaking it was a bit boring and you could see that GBS didn´t know what to do, too, they were making some jokes with each other. But the speech was also very good to inform the people who were sitting in front of their radios about Great Big Sea.

Then the show did go on with "Jolly Butcher", "General Taylor", "Lukey" and "How Did We Get From Saying I Love You...". After a short break coz of the man we saw them performing "Mari-Mac" & "When I´m Up". Before the broadcast was over we also heard "Excursion Around The Bay" & "Aunt Mary". GBS also performed four other songs which were not broadcast. Here they are (unfortunately I only remember three songs but I guess that the other one was "Old Black Rum"): "The Night Pat Murphy Died", "Old Brown´s Daughter" & "Run Runaway".

After the gig we went out, but me and a friend decided to go back again and tried to meet Alan. As we entered the room again, we saw Alan on stage. As he recognized us he came to us. He shook my friend's hand and gave me a huge embrace. I was so happy that he still remembered me from the Tonder Festival. We asked him when the next album will be released and he told us that it´ll come out in June. We also asked him if GBS will be at the Tonder Festival again this year. Alan said that they may be there but if they´ll be there that the Festival will be the only thing in Europe. I really hope that they´ll come back to Europe in the summer. Alan also showed us his german dictionary. After we said "bye" to each other, we left Bielefeld and went home. The next day, I went to Hamburg to see the guys again.
